Young India

The French can watch beautiful films at the Cannes Film Festival between 14th and 25th May. Meanwhile, Hindi movie lovers will watch Bhoothnath, Jannat and, above all, Jimmy.

Here are three among several films from Cannes that will be adored and discussed by cinephiles.

Entre les murs (The Class)The Class

Directed by: Laurent Cantet

Country: France

Year: 2008

Duration: 128 minutes

Synopsis:

François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighbourhood. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics is put to the test when his students begin to challenge his teaching methods .

YI thinks: Any Hindi movie director aiming to remake this film would think of how he can infuse dance and songs into the script.

There are many tough neighbourhoods in India with lots of room for classroom ethics. We need a gritty and brutally honest film that deals with schooling issues.

Linha De PasseLinha de Passe

Directed by: Walter Salles, Daniela Thomas

Country: Brazil

Year: 2008

Duration: 108 minutes

Synopsis:

Sao Paulo. 20 million inhabitants, 200 kilometers of traffic, 300,000 messengers on motorcycles. At the heart of one of the toughest, most chaotic cities in the world, four brothers try to reinvent themselves in different ways.

With the backdrop of Brazil in a state of emergency, every single one is looking for a way out.

YI thinks: How do the four brothers reinvent themselves? Do they fight the government and the police? Do they form a group of rebels and spread the ideal of democracy? Do they move out of Brazil and vow to come back with more money? Maybe they look for happiness in the reigning chaos and thereby reinvent themselves.

Two LoversTwo Lovers

Directed by: James Gray

Country: USA

Year: 2008

Duration: 100 minutes

Synopsis:

A depressed young man’s life is turned around after he moves back in with his parents and two women enter it – a beautiful volatile neighbour trapped in an affair and the lovely daughter of a close family friend.

Young India thinks: One wonders if the depressed young man would have any morality issues with the beautiful volatile neighbour. He seems much closer to her in terms of psyche and they should complement one another. However, the lovely daughter of the family friend could represent his progress or treatment from depression to calmness.

YI believes watching these three films would be more fun than watching numeros mediocre films with popcorn and samosa.
