Milestone Movies?

Psst... you think we are artistic enough?
Santa Singh
“Just because modern physics doesn’t say so, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.”

–Vikram Bhatt (director of 1920) with his deep insight on ghosts

The following story is probably better than all those films you’ll watch in plush multiplexes.
With this confidence, I present some films that you think would try to aim high and achieve some milestone. But I have a feeling that you’ll still have to rely on the popcorn for that ultimate movie experience.

Fantasy and Film

Kartikey Sehgal
The film Lagaan has a captivating screenplay. It mixes reality with fantasy and entertains while projecting the plight of the villagers.

The men of this village wear ironed clothes of different colours.
The women are healthy despite subsisting on a sukhi roti. Festivals
are celebrated with élan and the dances are passionately synchronised.
The village is happier than you would expect it to be under the economically cruel British rule.

Let’s remove fantasy from the realm of tangibility and see it as dream and imagination.

J&K land problem: A farce

Kartikey Sehgal gives a step-by-step explanation to the ongoing situation in the state of J&K over the land transfer issue.

People from Jammu and Kashmir are being fooled. Not to mention countless people in India who are easily misled by passions and emotions. We meet people who think that Kashmiri’s are being selfish and not giving the land for the Amarnath pilgrimage, and then there are those who think that Jammu citizens are being selfish in taking land from Kashmir when they can do without it.

Nobody is being selfish, except the politicians, of course.

This is what I know. Hindus in Jammu and Muslims in Kashmir are protesting against the government. And people in Kashmir are asking for independence.

No. Not everyone in Kashmir is asking for freedom. It’s only a faction that supports secession of Kashmir from India.

Then what are people from Jammu and Kashmir fighting over?

Simmering Valley

Ananth Venkatesh
The protests in J & K over the issue of the revocation of the command of the state Government to transfer 100 acres of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board has brought to the fore the unpleasant divisiveness hidden underneath the superficially secular fabric of the state.

An Exciting Bomb

Butterfly
Kartikey Sehgal
A green parcel-like bomb lies at the centre of a road. The police cordon off the entire area and send a protected man to diffuse it. Crowds stand at road corners wondering what would have happened had it exploded. News channels do the same; thinking on behalf of people sitting at home.

This is a time when caste and class barriers thin out. The madam in the fancy car and the salesman inside the fancy potholed road are discussing safety issues in a few sentences. And nobody asks the sweeper his caste before informing him about the green parcel that lies at the centre of the road.

Expat musings

GV, a Canadian resident, asks some profound questions about being an Indian. What does it mean to be Indian? What criteria must one fulfil to be acknowledged and accepted as an Indian? Why should one have any less claim over her birthright due to an upbringing in a foreign land?

Rambling about the ex

Crimson writes about an ex-flame.
I fell in love with ______ for two reasons: One, he was willing to stick his neck out for me and continue loving me until my parents accepted him in my life. Two, he accepted me for what I was without too much nagging or questioning.
Neither hold true today since all the while we were together, he had a hidden agenda. He was hoping he would succeed in changing me, my clothes, my attitude and my aspirations.

Democracy Reigns in Nepal

support of the people
Ananth Venkatesh
India must quickly establish cordial relations with the dominant force now in the Nepalese polity i.e. Maoists. The gruesome comrades of the Nepalese Maoists in India could learn many lessons from them, with the principal one being unswerving allegiance to peaceful politics.

The ideological closeness of the Nepali Maoists with that of the Chinese might provide some serious obstacles to the Indo-Nepalese alliance in the future.

Home Truths

Crimson writes about harsh family truths we can all identify with.
The youngest aunt descended upon me as soon as I entered the room. “Oh my God, your hair is so short,” she said. “And you’ve lost weight.” …I forced a smile and prepared myself for the barrage to come….“They pick up all the wrong habits,” interjected another aunt. “Look. The shoes she is wearing are so inappropriate for her age.” There were no greetings, no words of welcome, just a cold assessment of my appearance….
