This Story is about Democracy, Apparently.

Kartikey Sehgal

With a click of a button, you can support democracy, and help me start my harem.

I am no expert on particle physics. Even for the concepts I know, I often recheck them on the internet or in books. But I feel—like a million others—that particle physics connects to life. And I cannot go on any further without halting and gathering my thoughts, perhaps on paper first, and then typing them out on to a computer screen and finally referring to online notes. …

The Wisdom of ‘Death by Fasting’

Kartikey Sehgal

Social Activist Anna Hazare is fasting against corruption and in favour of a long-pending ‘anti-corruption’ bill’. (news source)

An act of desperation, defined at least by allusions to death, should be prefaced by an explanation for the desperation.

Never mind the obviousness of the situation. Death leaves no chance for any future discussions.

In the case that the people still have a mandate to vote, they may exercise it and make an informed and respectful decision. Our country has a functioning …

Libya: Mutiny and the Colonel

Ananth Venkatesh

The insurrection of a sizable segment of the Libyan populace against the Libyan autocrat, Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi, is a continuation of the popular mutinies that have characterized the Mohammedan world recently.

The civil strife is anchored in tribalism as the Colonel’s tyranny has spawned loads of loathing for his tribe. The demonstrators on the Libyan lanes predominantly belong to the opposing tribes of Libya that desire to witness the dethronement of the Colonel and his tribe.

Egypt and The Popular Mutiny: If Mubarak Should Stay

Ananth Venkatesh

Mubarak certainly shouldn’t quit now. The Egyptian Parliament should, first of all, amend the constitutional provisions to make the imperfect Egyptian democracy more perfect.

Democracy Reigns in Nepal

support of the people
Ananth Venkatesh
India must quickly establish cordial relations with the dominant force now in the Nepalese polity i.e. Maoists. The gruesome comrades of the Nepalese Maoists in India could learn many lessons from them, with the principal one being unswerving allegiance to peaceful politics.

The ideological closeness of the Nepali Maoists with that of the Chinese might provide some serious obstacles to the Indo-Nepalese alliance in the future.

A Refreshing Change

Equals in democracy

Despite her loss, Hillary Clinton’s candidature was significant.
Ananth Venkatesh calls it “a measure of the matureness of American democracy and its steady evolution”.

He states clearly the reasons for which American women were suppressed and prevented from the democratic freedom enjoyed by men.

The Liquidation Of Benazir Bhutto

benazirbhutto_main_pic.jpg

Ananth Venkatesh tells us why Benazir Bhutto was important for the world, for India and for women rights.

  • Her occupation of the seat of the PM served as a great uplift for all the women of Pakistan
  • Chauvinistic elements of the military found the prospect of dealing with a female PM unpalatable
  • She commendably and candidly confessed to the Indian media that she might have made blunders in the past
